The Commander of Polaris Composite Squadron is responsible to the corporation and to the  Alaska Wing Commander for ensuring that the corporation objectives, policies, and operational directives are effectively executed within the squadron.

Major Derk MacPherson assumed command of Polaris Comp Squadron on 4 Oct 2016. Before that he served as the Polaris Comp Sq Communications Officer and Emergency Services Training Officer. Previously serving as Commander of the Magic City Composite Squadron in Minot, North Dakota from July 2004 to April 2007, and North Dakota Wing Chief of Staff from April 2007 to April 2009.

Maj MacPherson joined as a California Wing cadet in 1987 and rose to the rank of Cadet Lieutenant Colonel before enlisting in the US Air Force in 1993. While a cadet he qualified as a CAP Ground Team Member and earned his Solo Pilot wings. He rejoined CAP in 1998 in Washington Wing as a Senior Member in the Cheney Composite Squadron in Spokane Washington, before moving to Minot, North Dakota.

A San Diego, California native and graduate of Mira Mesa High School. Maj MacPherson began is career as a Special Weapons Maintenance Technician in the United States Air Force in 1993. Retiring in 2013 as a Technical Sergeant, and Non-Commission Officer in Charge - Weapons Maintenance Section, and currently works for an Alaska Native Corporation as the Security Operations Center Manager.
